0 Drought – lack of rain. It is a long period without any nourishment for the soil.Rain – nourishes and gives life.
Loss and regaining.
Stanz She starts off stanza one with her dependant (subordinate) clause. But she ends with her
a1 dependant (main) cause. The main clause being isolated adds emphasis. Everyone is in
this conversation, but she focuses on the rain. The rain seems to be more important to
the speaker than the endless chatter.
1-2 She is in a social environment and there is a gathering.
“Words”, “circled” and “each” – there is a repetition. The talk circled the room. There are
just words flying around the room. The talk is endless and it goes on and on. It goes from
person to person.
“There is laughter and chairs moving” – people are moving and swapping places. Very
wecoming and chatting.
Heedlessly – Without thinking, careless and freely.
3 Repetition of the prefix – “inter” – means between.
There is once again a sense of endless speech. Adds to the atmosphere of continuous
chatter.
4 While all of this chatter is going on in this social environment, she hears the rain.
5 There is a repetition of rain. She says her attention is on the rain. In addition, when it
begins, it’s a slow rain.
6 The rain starts to grow faster and faster.

7 It’s just a pass by comment. They have been so absorbed in their conversation that they
haven’t noticed what goes on around them. Others are just noticing it but for the poet is
an underlying symbol that has a deeper meaning.
8 For me, for me – The repetition places emphasis on the speaker and it comes at the end
of the line. It places emphasis on how separate she is from the others. It isolates how she
feels in comparison to how others react to the rain.

else knows what she is thinking about when she looks at the rain.
9 - 10 When you mark something you observe it or note it. She pays attention and analyses the
rain – shows her contrast to the other.
10 She does talk to other people, but her main focus is on the rain. She keeps on going back
to the rain.
11 Her senses are going outside to where the rain is. Her attention keeps on shifting – she I
trying to have some conversations but her sense are out there, and she cannot focus on
her conversations.
All her senses wander. Present in body, absent in mind.
12 She is talking about the external factors.
She is beyond the dividing pane – she is out the door – her mind is focused on external
factors.
13 Only – shows that the rain is unimportant to the others.
