ASA 101: Navigation
72 COLREGS - ✅✅-International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea
Rule 2: General Prudential Rule - ✅✅-All vessels should take any actions necessary to
prevent collisions.

Rule 5: The Lookout Rule - ✅✅ -Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper lookout by
sight and hearing as well as by all means available appropriate in the prevailing
circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and the risk of
collision.

Rule 10: Traffic Separation Schemes - ✅✅ -Navigation schemes used near ports to keep
traffic separated, basically providing separate 'lanes' for inbound and outbound traffic.

Avoid crossing these if possible. If unavoidable, cross at as close to a right angle as
possible, as quickly as possible (use the engine).

Rule 12: Sailing Vessels, converging on opposite tacks - ✅✅-The vessel on the starboard
tack is the stand-on vessel.

Rule 12: Sailing Vessels, converging on same tack - ✅✅-The leeward vessel is the
stand-on vessel.

Rule 13: Overtaking - ✅✅ -The overtaking vessel - even if a sailboat - is the give-way
vessel. A vessel is overtaking another if it is approaching within an arc of 22.5 degrees aft of
each side of the beam of the overtaken vessel - so a region 135 degrees wide centered on
the beam facing aft.

Rule 14: Head on - ✅✅-For power boats, steer like driving so you pass on the port side.
Rule 15: Crossing - ✅✅-When two power boats are neither meeting nor in an overtaking
situation, they are crossing. The vessel that has the other on its starboard side is the
give-way vessel.

Rule 16: Action by Give-way Vessel - ✅✅ -The give-way vessel should take early and
substantial action to keep well clear of the other vessel.

Rule 17: Action by Stand-on Vessel - ✅✅ -The stand-on vessel should maintain course and
speed. However, if the give-way vessel does not take action, the stand-on may take action,
and must if there is a risk of collision.

Rule 18: Hierarchy of Priviledge - ✅✅ -1. Stay clear of vessels that are 'not under
command', e.g. do not have propulsion.
2. Stay clear of vessels with restricted maneuverability.
3. In shallow waters, stay clean of vessels constrained by draft.
4. Stay clear of vessels engaged in fishing.
