Describe how health, safety and hygiene legislations P4
impact food retailers
Health and Safety Legislations
Health and Safety is Regulations and procedures intended to prevent accident or injury in
workplaces and public environments (Oxford Dictionary, 2018). Health and safety legislations are in
place to protect employees within the work place and allow all the risks to be acknowledge and
controlled, which ultimately allows for a safe working environment. The four main legislations
impacting food retailers are:
Health and Safety at work act 1974
Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulation 1981
Reporting of inquires diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations 1995
Control of substances hazardous to health 2002
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
The health and safety at Work Act 1974 lays down duties on employers. Employers must protect
H&S and Welfare at Work, as well as other within the premises, this may include temporary workers,
casual workers, self-employed workers, visitors and general public. (WorkSmart, 2018) This act sates
that the working environment must be safe, equipment within the business must be maintained
safely, safety clothing must be worn if needed for the specific job role and lastly Health & safety
training must be taught to employees before starting work.
This act has a massive impact on food retailers such as Tesco as they must take this act into major
account, This I because employers of Tesco such as HR managers must ensure safety to all
employees within Tesco, Tesco do this by having certain employees wearing high visibility vests
when working in the back moving items such as fruit. As well as this Tesco’s employers must ensure
all employees have the correct equipment to work such as the correct barcode scanners when
putting in stock as this will ensure the correct products are displayed. As well as this employers of
Tesco need to ensure employees working within store in department such as food retail will need
the appropriate clothing such as a Tesco fleece in order for customers of Tesco to know that they
work there ensuring safety within the workplace.
Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981
The health and Safety first aid Act requires employers to provide correct equipment, facilities and
personnel to employees this allows employees to receive immediate attention when they are injured
at work. This means they need to have trained employees who know how to give first aid help, this
Act also ensures there is a first aid box and a first aid room within an organisation to allow injuries to
get dealt with temporary.
Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations has a massive impact on Tesco’s as they will need to ensure
they have a first aider present at all times within each store or staff which are trained and possess a
certificate within first aid, this will allow any injuries to be temperately treated, this ensure that
Tesco meets the regulation and has a safe working environment.
Reporting of injuries diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations (RIIDOR) 1995
