AAMI Microbio Final
Eukaryote - ANS-Any cell or organism that possesses a clearly defined nucleus. Also
contains organelles such as mitochondria, Golgi, apparatus and lysosomes
Normal Flora - ANS-Live on or within the bodies of animals and plants and do not cause
disease in healthy individuals. Contributes to the well-being of the host.
Prokaryote - ANS-Any organism that lacks a distinct nucleus and other organelles due
to the absence of internal membranes. 1 chromosome. Bacteria.
Microbiology - ANS-The scientific study of microorganisms or microbes and their effects
on other living organisms.
Naming Organisms - ANS-The first part of an organisms name is called Genus (family
name); the second part of the name is the specie (last name)
Genus - ANS-The Genus is Capitalized but it ALSO MUST either be italicized or
underlined
Species - ANS-The species is NOT capitalized but is ALWAYS Italicized or underlined
Morphology - ANS-The study of shape
Vibrio - ANS-Shaped like a comma
Spirochete - ANS-Spiral shaped bacteria that have a flexible cell wall.
Coccus - ANS-Round/Spherical shaped
Diplobacilli - ANS-Square Pairs
Streptobacilli - ANS-Square Chains
Capsule - ANS-A gelatinous coating that surrounds some bacterial cells that helps to
protect against phagocytosis.
Phagocytosis - ANS-The process in which phagocytes (white blood cells) engulf and
destroy microorganisms and other foreign bodies.
, Endospore/spore - ANS-A thick-walled body produced by a bacterium to enable it to
survive unfavorable environmental conditions
Lack of nutrients/food, poor environment, unsuitable living conditions, heat, drying,
certain chemicals: etc - ANS-survivable environment for endospores/spores
if a bacterium is threatened - ANS-it will form an endospore/spore as a protective coat
of armor. This can survive thousands of years.
Sporulation - ANS-The process of forming the endospore/spore
Endospores are ONLY produced by - ANS-Rod Shaped bacteria - Bacillus anthracis,
clostridium tetani, Clostridium botulinum, and Clostridium perfringens
Endospores are NOT destroyed during - ANS-Embalming. They are resistant to
disinfectants.
Endospores ARE destroyed by - ANS-Sterilization - which is not apart of embalming
Flagella - ANS-Long whip-like appendages that move the bacterial cell. Locomotion or
motility
Lophotrichous - ANS-A tuft of flagella at one or both ends
Peritrichous - ANS-Present at multiple sites around the bacterium
If a bacterial cell HAS a CAPSULE it will NOT have - ANS-Flagella
Binary fission/simple transverse division - ANS-A type of asexual reproduction in
prokaryotic cells resulting in two individual cells with genetic consistency.
Heterotrophs - ANS-MUST obtain their nourishment from complex organic matter.
Depends on other organisms for food supply.
strict (obligate) parasite - ANS-Can only get their nourishment from ONE source.
