Unit 17: Services for Children and Assignment 1 Elize Bridewell
their Families

Assignment 1- Health, Social Services and Education Provision.

(M1) The entitlement of children and their families for accessing Health,
Education and Social services are available and free as stated by the
UNCRC that said, “every child has the right to survival, protection and
education”, from the UNCRC the legislation for the services of the families
and the children came from the UNCRC. From this is meant that every child
and their families were entitled to free access to the legislations such as
the education act to ensure that children are getting an education and that
when they are below the age of 2 years old, that they get funding to
enable them to attend education, the National Health Service is accessible through the doctors, the
hospital, opticians and dental practice when you are below the age of 18, above the age of 18 you need
to pay for any treatment. The NHS allows all children and their families to receive care and treatment
that will maintain their health and be able to access. If this service isn’t
accessible, then it may mean that children and their families will be unable
to afford any treatment.

The code of practice is a part of legislation that allows the education
setting that is providing the provision for the children to complete
assessments with the children so that they can then identify from an early
age if the child needs to be referred to a specialist such as a speech and
language therapist or an otologist, which is a hearing doctor. Once the
school or nursery has referred the child to these services it will mean that
they will benefit from this as support can be put into place to ensure that they are receiving the best
learning that they could get and that they are developing the way that they should be, by reaching their
milestones. If this piece of legislation wasn’t available to the children that attend the school/ nursery
and their family are unable to identify these impairments then the child will suffer as they may get
frustrated with why they are unable to hear clearly or find difficulty in reading or writing as they may
have dyslexia or glue ear which from completing the assessments the provision may be able to identify
these issues easier and be able to refer them to get help and support from specialists.

The legislation that means that children and their families are entitled to accessing
social services is the Children and Young Person’s act of 2008, this act is important
as it means that the government provides social work services to the children and
young people in an area that need it, this is provided up until you are 18 years of
age. This act helps to put adoption or fostering in place, this is usually done if the
child or young person is in a dangerous or harmful situation and need to be
removed from it, or if their current parent/ family are unfit to provide maintained
care that will keep them safe and away from any harmful situations or living situations.

All the above are highly important as each one ensures the access to children and their families to
enable them to have available free health care, education provision and to have social services readily
available if ever needed. It is also vital that the children and the families know that these services are
accessible and available to them to have maintained health by attending doctors and hospitals etc., the
education funding from a certain age where you can have 15 hours funding per week for your child to
attend nursery and that if needed the social services will be there to protect the children.
