, Introduction

The purpose of this manual, designed to accompany the Starkey, Long, and Cavallario text,

Examination of Orthopedic and Athletic Injuries, is to provide educators with strategies and

ideas to help students master the skills necessary to properly evaluate and come up with

correct diagnoses. This guide can be used in conjunction with FADavis.com, an online outlet

for instructors, that includes images, videos, and PowerPoint presentations associated with

the chapters.

The following chapters contain instructional strategies and activities that may be used

in the classroom or laboratory setting. The instructional strategies provided are to encourage

application of classroom knowledge to the clinical setting. Each chapter in this manual has a

matching chapter in the text and will present the following features:

1. Learning Objectives: Learning objectives are skills that are specific to each chapter. A

comprehensive listing of objectives to be achieved with the use of this book is provided

later in this introduction.

2. Key Points: Key points are “take away” points and/or describe some of the nuances in

the clinical diagnostic process.

3. Answers to End-of-Chapter Review Questions. These are the answers to the end-of-

chapter Review Questions found in the book.

4. Activities: There are a variety of different ways that this course can be taught. Each

chapter of the instructor’s guide has activities to help foster learning. Below are some of

the different activities within each chapter.

1. Palpation Worksheet: The palpation worksheet is a list of structures that each

student should be able to identify after reading the chapter. Each chapter will have

a palpation worksheet that can be completed in pairs or small groups. In addition

to the anatomical landmarks, tips and questions to guide the process are provided.
