,QUESTION 1
Consider the following time periods:
• Renaissance
• 20th Century
• 4th Industrial revolution
In each time period, a) write a paragraph of ten lines based on your understanding of the
differences of the time periods. b) Locate the time period in your own context.
Renaissance:
The era is marked by such profound technical advancements like the printing press, linear
perceptivity, patent law, double shell domes or Bastion fortresses. Note books of the
Renaissance artist-engineers such as Taccola and Leonardo da Vinci give a deep insight into the
mechanical technology then known and applied. Architects and engineers were inspired by the
structures of Ancient Rome, and men like Brunelleschi created the large dome of Florence
Cathedral as a result. He was awarded one of the first patents ever issued in order to protect an
ingenious crane he designed to raise the large masonry stones to the top of the structure.
Military technology developed rapidly with the widespread use of the cross-bow and ever more
powerful artillery, as the city-states of Italy were usually in conflict with one another. Powerful
families like the Medici were strong patrons of the arts and sciences. Renaissance science
spawned the Scientific Revolution; science and technology began a cycle of mutual
advancement.
Locate the time period in your own context:
The cultural movement spanned the period roughly from the 14th to the 17th century.
2
, 20th Century:
20th Century technology developed rapidly. Communication technology, transportation
technology, broad teaching and implementation of scientific method, and increased research
spending all contributed to the advancement of modern science and technology. Due to the
scientific gains directly tied to military research and development, technologies including
electronic computing might have developed as rapidly as they did in part due to war.
Radio, radar, and early sound recording were key technologies which paved the way for the
telephone, fax machine, and magnetic storage of data. Energy and engine technology
improvements were also vast, including nuclear power, developed after the Manhattan project.
Transport by rocketry: most work occurred in the U.S. (Goddard), Russia (Tsiolkovsky) and
Germany (Oberth). Making use of computers and advanced research labs, modern scientists
have recombinant DNA.
Locate the time period in your own context:
The 20th century began on the 1 st of January 1901, and ended on the 31 st of December 2000. It
was the tenth and final century of the 2nd millennium.
4th Industrial revolution:
By enabling “smart factories”, the Fourth Industrial Revolution creates a world in which virtual
and physical systems of manufacturing globally cooperate with each other in a flexible way. This
enables the absolute customization of products and the creation of new operating models.
The fourth industrial revolution, however, is not only about smart and connected machines and
systems. Its scope is much wider. Occurring simultaneously are waves of further breakthroughs
in areas ranging from gene sequencing to nanotechnology, from renewables to quantum
computing.
It is the fusion of these technologies and their interaction across the physical, digital and
biological domains that make the fourth industrial revolution fundamentally different from
previous revolutions. In this revolution, emerging technologies and broad-based innovation are
diffusing much faster and more widely than in previous ones, which continue to unfold in some
parts of the world.
Locate the time period in your own context:
The 21st Century.
