FINAL PORTFOLIO: BACK AT THE
CROSSROAD?
Phew! Almost done. Just one last thing to do – assemble a portfolio.
But before we get down to the nitty gritty of that, I’m curious. In the module welcome message on the home
pages, we promised you a crazy module. In fact we warned you
Introduction
My aim in compiling this portfolio was to reflect on the things that have struck me throughout
this crazy module. My starting point for doing this was to revisit my opinions to the multiple
choice questions which were presented in the Crossroads assignment. I present these
current opinions, together with my original opinions, and some brief notes in the section
entitled: “Back at the Crossroads! Once I have done this, I draw some key conclusions
about this crazy module and about the things that did indeed strike me.
Back at the Crossroads!

Notes: My opinion on this statement is going for option e: "I think that we need to work on
our imagination then because this is clearly absurd." This perspective acknowledges the
need to expand our imagination beyond the confines of capitalism as the only conceivable

economic system. It challenges the notion that capitalism is immutable and encourages
exploration of alternative socio-economic models. As well as, it recognizes the
interconnectedness of wealth and poverty, and how the prosperity of a few often relies on
the exploitation or underpayment of many. This aligns with a critical examination of wealth
distribution and the ethical implications of economic systems.

Choice in assignment 1: e
Notes: My preference would be option e: "Slogans are pointless. We have to make big
changes to get rid of racism. Just saying slogans or doing small things won't fix it. Racism is
deeply built into how society works, so we need to change those things. This means taking
real action to change laws, rules, and how we treat each other. We can't just talk about it;
we have to do something to make things fair for everyone, especially those who are treated
unfairly because of their race.
Choice now: Option c
Choice in assignment 1: c
Notes: I opt for option c: "So let me get this straight – Freire is saying that in order for some
to continue being generous (like Bill Gates), wealth AND poverty need to be sustained? I’m
going to have to think about this." This response reflects a thoughtful engagement with
Freire's idea, indicating a willingness to reconsider one's perspective in light of new
insights. It acknowledges the complexity of the relationship between generosity, wealth,
and poverty, prompting further reflection on the dynamics of oppression and social justice.
