Directions: Prior to completing this template, carefully review Week 4: Course Project Part 2 Directions paying attention to how to name the document and all rubric requirements. Name: Student Name 1. Description of Issue, Indicator, and Focus The approved transcultural nursing issue is high rates overweight and obesity among the Hispanic population. This is a major concern because Hispanics are ranked as second nationally with 78.8 percent of all Hispanics being classified as overweight or obese. Moreover, over the 78.8 percent considered to be overweight, 52 percent are confirmed to be obese. In terms of sub-groups, children that are aged 15 years and below are obese that is attributed to the widely held cultural belief that a thicker child is a healthier child. The health dangers associated with obesity and overweight cannot be overemphasized. From diabetes, heart related diseases such as damage to the nerves, kidney failure, blindness and stroke. The approved Healthy People 2030 Leading Health Indicator include focus on risk factors as well as behaviors in relation to increased levels of obesity among Hispanics; deal with issues that are of national importance in relation to the transcultural nursing issue (obesity among the Hispanic population); identify and address issues that ought to be of high priority for public health (how obesity among the Hispanic population impacts public health); identify evidence-based intervention strategies designed to elicit the will to make healthy decisions; and identify and deal with the factors that contribute towards increased rates of obesity among Hispanics such as high levels of health disparities (lack of access to quality healthcare and lack of health insurance). For starters, an estimated 27 percent of children from the Hispanic population are classified as being uninsured. In terms nutrition, malnutrition, which is the excessive or inadequate intake of specific nutrients is seen as a persistent issue among the Hispanics. NR 394 Transcultural Nursing Week 4: Course Project Part 2 When it comes to fast food joints, they tend to be strategically placed within certain communities or areas especially the communities considered to be low wage or income. The low priced menus on these joints and restaurants become the source of their daily food intake. These areas tend to be where most African American and Hispanics populations reside; hence, the reason as to why these two communities rank top in terms of high obesity rates. Hispanics are known to consume little or no fruits in their diet basically less than the recommended four servings of vegetables and fruits daily. One of the reasons for this is that accessing fruits and vegetables can be difficult in the described fast food joints and restaurants and where they can be found, they are expensive. The approved cultural focus is the presence of a cultural tendency among Hispanic population that views overweight as a symbol of good health, social status as well as well-being. There is a cultural preference where a person who is overweight is seen as one who is good health; thereby, depicting a higher level of socioeconomic status within the community. This explains the high rate of obesity and overweight and obesity among the Hispanics. For instance, chubby children are considered to be healthy children, which is often as source of pride for mothers. This puts a lot of pressure on the mother from both the community and the family to always ensure their children are chubby, which is a path to obesity and overweight. 2.
