The Final Project is a descriptive narrative divided in two sections. Section One requires
you to analyze a case study of a family in crisis, to include a child, an adolescent, and a
set of parents. Section Two is a self-reflection of your abilities to be an effective clinician
who works with children, adolescents, and families.
This Final Project is a 6- to 8-page paper and will be due Day 3 of Week 11. Include the
following sections in your Final Project:
Section One:
Choose one of the three Case Studies focusing on a family in crisis. Each member of
the family has unique issues that you must address. You must also determine the
primary problems (this may include diagnostic impressions but not formal diagnoses),
intervention, prevention, and education required to assist the family. In your project, do
the following:
Identify the client and the presenting problem or symptoms. Briefly explain if
anyone else is involved and how they contribute to the problem. Explain if anyone other
than the “identified client” also could be identified as a client. If so, describe who and
why.
Brady is a 15-year-old, Caucasian male. According to his father, Brady is irritable,
impulsive, and often in trouble at school; has difficulty concentrating on work (both at
home and in school); and uses foul language(The Case Of Brady).According to the social
worker, Brady presented as immature and exhibited below-average intelligence and
emotional functioning. He reported feelings of low self-esteem, fear of his father, and no
desire to attend school( The Case Of Brady). Brady’s father Steve could also be identified
as a client. Due to the dynamics of the family, they have both suffered a great loss in
which makes it difficult for both Brady and his father to maintain a healthy father and son
relationship. In this, Brady’s father tends to be stricter when it comes to his views and
tolerance of Brady’s behaviors. He also tends to be very aggressive verbally and
physically towards Bradly out of his own frustrations and anger. By his father exhibiting
, this behavior, it is causing what Erickson describes as Brady feeling lost and experiencing
role confusion.
Briefly describe any underlying problems or potential mental health diagnoses
contributing to the primary problem that should be noted as you proceed with the client.
The death of a parent or sibling (family bereavement) is associated with mental health problems in
approximately, 25 % of the affected children( Stikkelbroek, Bodden, Reitz, Vollebergh, & Baar 2015). In
the case of Brady, the underlying problem is the passing of Brady’s mother has caused
Brady to show signs of depression. According to Sallinen, Ronka, Kinnunen, & Kokko,
(2007), parent–adolescent conflict has been linked to an increase of depressive symptoms
from early to late adolescence.” This diminishes Bradly’s views of self-worth and his
ability to succeeded academically in school. According to studies (Berg, Rostila, Saarela,
& Hjern, 2014), parental death during childhood was associated with lower grades and
school failure. Parental death during childhood has been linked to increased mortality and
mental health problems in adulthood (Berg et al, 2014)The passing of his mother has also
cause him to engage in problem behaviors which is also causing a strain on him and his
father’s relationship.
Briefly describe the presenting problem from the family’s perspective and what
theoretical perspective you will use to assess, analyze, and develop a treatment plan for
this case.
The fact of Brady experiencing such a great loss and not being supported emotionally by
his father diminished his self-esteem and ability to take care of his own emotional and
mental health needs. It caused him to lack self-worth and keep his emotions and feelings
