Define and differentiate between data, information, and knowledge. Discuss how each can
contribute to organizational competitive advantage.
Data is a set of characters and symbols that have a specific meaning when used in a context
(Kottil, 2021). Data is generated through measuring and collections of observations. Data can be
processed, sent, or received between different parties. The more technology advance the better
we can generate, manipulate and transfer data. Computers nowadays can store and compute a
large amount of data in an instant.
As mentioned above, data will have meaning when it's integrated with context. This higher form
of data is called information. Information about people, things, or facts can be shared to provide
expertise. When information regarding a person or fact is collected it becomes knowledge
(Kottil, 2021). Knowledge is used to make an informed decision and find a solution to a
problem. Consequently, the decisions we make reflect the level of our knowledge. The same
could be applied to computers. The more data there is the better the analysis and the better the
conclusion drawn from the analysis.
We can summarize that data is a piece of characters and symbols fragments and without context.
When we refine the data and add context we will get information. When information is collected
and categorized it provides depth and we call that Knowledge (Zins, 2007).
Organizations make several decisions on a day-to-day basis. These decisions could push the firm
forward or act as a hindrance. To make the best decisions organizations need to gather sufficient
data. However, gathering data is not sufficient and it needs to be compiled and structured to form
information. The market is continuously evolving; hence customers need to collect data
regarding the change to stay up to date. Businesses use the information they acquire to get
insight into the market and customers. Finally, businesses use knowledge to predict future trends,
plan their activities and make wise decisions. This helps businesses to stay competitive in their
sector.
