What is business process reengineering? How is it different from incrementally improving
a process?
Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is a radical redesign of the core business processes to
minimize cost and cycle time while maximizing quality (Varun & Malhotra, 1997). Companies
implementing BRP go through a complete makeover by analyzing the current process and its
failures. A new system of values will need to be implemented to align with the reengineering of
processes. The common approach is to focus on customer needs and minimize the bureaucracy.
Business process reengineering is commonly implemented in five major steps (Varun &
Malhotra, 1997). The first step is to change the corporate's value to focus on customer needs. The
second step is to redesign the core process using information technology to build the capacity to
meet the customer needs. The third step is building cross-function teams that are accountable for
each process. The fourth step is to delve deeper and assess the organization and people issues.
Finally, bring the whole process together and make a radical improvement in the organization.
Some companies use a different approach than BPR to improve their operation in an incremental
approach. This approach is called business process improvement (BPI) it has similar objectives
but the process is different. BPR is aimed at attaining dramatic improvement by reengineering
the whole process. While business process improvement is aimed at making improvements
within the organizational structure (Visual Paradigm, 2021).
BPR is commonly applied to respond to major changes in the market, legal or political
environment or fend off a major disaster. However, BPI is applied as a preventive measure and
corrects operational issues (Visual Paradigm, 2021). The incremental business improvement will
give the firm quick but small wins while BPR provides significant improvement but requires
significant changes as well.
