“Language is the roadmap of a culture. It tells you where its people came from and where they are
going.” Rita Mae Brown.
Your identity is something that evolves and changes every day, as we grow older we are building our
identity constantly. My linguistic identity consists of an Afrikaans background which leads to
socializing in groups of people who speak my mother tongue rather than people with different
languages. While being at university I got the opportunity to be in an environment where there are so
many cultures and I got the opportunity to learn isiXhosa. I believe my linguistic identity is ever
changing, I love learning about the people around me and if it allows me to learn a new language I will
try my best to learn it. I am comfortable speaking Afrikaans and English as a home language but
would love to expand my linguistic skills. I am in love with Afrikaans since I believe it is a "harts taal"
and I best express myself through it.
Your identity consists not just of your linguistic identity but also of your master identity, interactional
identity, personal identity and your relational identity. Your master identity is things that won’t change
like your gender; ethnicity, age, nationality and regional origins. Interactional identity refers to the role
you take on when communicating with other people. Personal identity is how you behave in certain
situations and around different people. Last but not least is rational identity. I believe that everything
you do and experience influences your identity.
As said already my linguistic identity is changing due to all my identities being affected through things
that I do and experience also by meeting people from different backgrounds. Most important I believe
our language should not define us, we are allowed to be what we want to not what society thinks we
need to be.
