Situation – doctors thought that a patient may have meningitis
Challenge – to confirm their diagnosis they wanted to do a lumbar puncture
Action – they explained the procedure and the benefits and risks to the patient to
take informed consent from the patient
Response – Clear communication reduced the anxiety of the patient and they
accepted to go ahead despite a fear of needles

also to allow them to feel at ease during such a distressing time.
• I learnt about primary care as well and the importance of GPs especially due to the
UK’s ageing population etc… also GP shortage.

place. I realised that studying medicine requires not only being able to cope with a
huge workload but also commitment to lifelong learning even after medical school

would need to devise methods to overcome this

knew exactly where we were and then planned a route. We split the contents of the
injured team members bag between us and each carried a few extra things

work as part of the MDT with a variety of allied health care professionals to provide
optimal care.
