Remember by Christina Rosseti

Poet:Victorian period[realism, strict conventions, peace, realism, severe social problems]
People died more frequently then
1.Remember me when I am gone away, Summarising statement of speakers intention.
Written in imperative mood as speaker issuing
instruction/request to unnamed you
S clarifies wants to be remembered after she has died
-> Emphasises distance btw them by expanding gone away to
gone far away

2. Gone far away into the silent land; Will have entered silent land- seems euphemism for afterlife
‘Silent’-peaceful place of divine contemplate/barren devoid
of noise
"Remember me" is juxtaposed with "gone away,"
*seems less permanent bcs never say will be gone forever

3. When you can no more hold me by the hand, Confirms will be dead. Suggest not be able to hold each
other+person not able accompany speaker on journey
[suggests lover]
*holding hand symbolizes physical presence+life- very things
that death eliminates

4. Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Inevitability+finality of speakers death.
Once begun to die/turn away- unable to turn back. -> Evokes
intimate moment that lovers share- turns back last
kiss/embrace
-captures depths+intensity of their love, highlighting how
much will be lost after she has died

*narration of a past event, this little snippet is practically a
metaphor for the speaker's feelings about death as well.

5. Remember me when no more day by day Repeats request
-Asks lover to remember her in moments when he would
have told her about his plans for their future

*memory again appears to be a metaphor for life.
-It comes across as an antidote/compensation for fact she+
her beloved can no longer hold hands +discuss future tog

6. You tell me of our future that you plann'd: -> Planned future emphasise strength of bond +magnitude of
what will be missing after speaker dies
-> Intimate moment- future plans- elevated+ transformed by
speaker into profound, heart breaking expression of what is
lost when person love dies
