It is almost every student’s dream to graduate and finally enter the professional world
and try to apply what he/she has learned at school. The time when an undergraduate transitions
to a health professional is known as a period of incredible stress for the new graduate. When
new graduates start their clinical practice, they are often met with new challenges, especially in
a new environment. There are a lot of adjustments to be made as they used to do procedures
and activities while being supervised in an environment that was controlled to one that they
must practice independently as certified healthcare professionals. The change in status also
includes changes in expectations and roles, which merits the application of theoretical
knowledge attained from school into real-life practice (Opoku et al., 2020). However, this
transition also brings about a lot of challenges, especially since these are still considered novice
in their respective fields. In this paper, the various challenges that Toby, a Graduate Registered
Nurse (RN) will be tackled from different angles.
A Brief Background on Toby’s Situation
Toby is a graduate registered nurse who is having a difficult time transitioning to
professional practice. As a novice nurse, he finds it difficult to find a good work and life balance,
rendering him anxious and unsatisfied with his efforts. Toby’s inability to meet with his friends
and work independently and efficiently has caused him a great deal of stress. He requires
effective management of conflicting priorities or values, as well as uncertainty in his role as a
graduate registered nurse (Opoku et al., 2020). At work, he also seemed to have issues working
with new people, especially with the nurse-in-charge, as he seemed hesitant to ask for help with
his duties. He tries to prepare the best that he can for what he expected to happen, but when
things did not go as planned, he was not able to cope as what is expected of him.
