one?
a. It includes all of the existing cases of disease in a community
b. It depends on the duration of the disease process
c. It can be used to help determine the health care needs of a community

Unedited response from Prof Tulloch-Reid

Prevalence is affected by natural history - meaning that some persons will
recover from an illness and can become disease free, while others could die
from the disease and not be present or others continue to have the disease
so depending on the natural history of the disease incidence and duration
would not completely account for prevalence.

Prevalence is a picture of a situation at one point in time (though it may
not be acquired instantaneously eg a painting vs a picture), is affected by
disease duration (short term diseases or chronic diseases with high
mortality or chronic disease with a long pre-clinical phase are less likely
to be accounted for and chronic diseases with low mortality will have
greater representation) and as a descriptor of disease burden it can help
to determine the health needs of the community.

6. When a new treatment is developed that delays deaths but does not produce recovery
from a chronic disease, which of the following will occur.
a. Prevalence of the disease will decrease
b. Prevalence of the disease will increase
c. Incidence of the disease will decrease
d. Incidence & prevalence of the disease will decrease
