Asphalt Melter: - ANS An approved device designed to heat asphalt, typically for waterproofing
operations, that, utilizing a flammable gas or a combustible liquid, generates an enclosed flame
that indirectly heats a vessel containing the asphalt.
CNG: - ANS Compressed natural gas.
Compressed Gas: - ANS A material, or mixture of materials, that is a gas at 68F or less at 14.7
psia of pressure; and has a boiling point of 68F or less 14.7 psia that is either liquefied, non
liquefies or in solution at that temperature and pressure, except that gases which have no other
health- or physical-hazard properties are not considered to be compressed until the pressure in
the packaging exceeds 41 psia at 68F. Compressed gasses shall be classified as follows:
Non Liquefied compressed gasses: - ANS Gases, other than those in solution, that are in a
packing under the charged pressure and are entirely gaseous at temperature of 68F
Liquefied compressed gasses: - ANS Gases that, in a packing under the charged pressure,
are partially liquid at a temperature of 68F
Compassed Gases in solution: - ANS Non Liquefied gasses that are dissolved in a solvent
Compassed gas mixtures: - ANS A mixture of two or more compressed gasses contained in a
single packaging, the hazard properties of which are represented by the properties of the
mixture as a whole.
Electric Barbecue: - ANS Any device designed for heating or cooking food on an open grate
cooking surface above exposed heating elements. An electric grill that has its heating elements
embedded within a solid cooking surface is not an electric barbecue.
Flammable Gas: - ANS A material which has a boiling point and becomes a gas at 68F (20C)
or less at 14.7 pounds per square inch absolute (psia) (101 KPa) of pressure which:
1. Is ignitable at 14.7 psia (101 KPa) when in a mixture of 13 percent or less by volume with air,
in accordance with testing procedures set forth in ASTM E 681; or
2. Has a flammable range at 14.7 psia (101 KPa) with air of at least 12 percent, regardless of
the lower explosive limit, in accordance with testing procedures set forth in ASTM E 681.
General Supervision: - ANS Supervision by the holder of any FDNY certificate who is
responsible for performing the duties of the Certificate of Fitness holder but need not be
personally present on the premises at all times.
