Geology 1010 - Lecture 17

Why do we care? - ANSmajor agent of weathering and erosion; important sources of freshwater
for drinking and irrigation; flood is the most common type of natural hazard

drainage basin - ANSentire low lying area where all the water will drain into that river/stream

channels - ANSwhere all the water has filled in and is moving; causes v-shaped valleys

v-shaped valleys - ANSvalley around river that has been sharpened due to water erosion

tributaries - ANSsmaller streams that feed water into larger ones

3 different patterns of tributaries: - ANSbranching/dendritic, radial, rectangular

branching/dendritic pattern - ANSlook like branches or veins; small acute angle where rivers
meet; very common

radial pattern - ANSrivers around edges, but not center; helps to see the high points of
landscape; middle is top of a hill

rectangular pattern - ANSrivers meet at 90 degree angles; very blocky look; indicates fractures
in bedrock underneath river like joints, water follows joint patterns

levee - ANSarea of raised elevation on either side of channels; form naturally from dropped
sediment due to flooding, but can be manmade as well

floodplain - ANSflat plain-like area that will flood when river overflows its banks; popular for
development, so must be mindful

braided stream/river - ANSseveral channels similar in size that intertwine with each other; rare

3 causes of braided streams/rivers - ANSvariable discharge, large sediment supply, easily
erodible banks

variable discharge - ANSwater amount varies a lot

large sediment supply - ANSerodes a lot of material, depositions clog channels and water must
divert and flow around it

easily erodible banks - ANSallows channel to widen and split
