structure:
At the top of your report in the header first make sure that the “Different first page” box is ticked so that the header is
only shown on the first page. Then in the header insert a title for the report that outlines its main contents, what
business it is for and who it has been compiled by.
Example:
Formal report on the current management challenges faced by Saxon Theme Parks Ltd
and the suggested management proposals and recommendations.
This report has been prepared by (Insert your name) and is intended for the management
of Saxon Theme Parks Ltd :
Part A:
Date:
1. Introduction
1.1 The purpose of this report is to:
(i) Give an overview of Saxon Fields e.g. theme park, UK attraction, 50 years established
(ii) Purpose of the report - we are a researcher for a management consultant company,
purpose is to help them prepare for a meeting use the information and data provided
2. Proposed key strategic objectives
List the strategic objectives/goals of Saxon Fields and explain each one, these are listed in the Part
A extract and there are 3 of them. (Below are the goals mentioned)
2.1 - to be one of the top 10 tourist attractions in the UK
2.2 - to increase customer satisfaction
2.3 - to increase profit
3. Current management challenges faced by Saxon Fields (3-4 challenges):
- Using the case study identify 3-4 challenges faced by the Saxon Fields that is negatively impacting their
strategic objectives, below are some real challenges you can use:
3.1 Unsuitable management style
3.1.1 Using the case study, identify the current management style (Autocratic) used in the
business giving a justification. Mention the advantages of the business using the
Autocratic style and list the disadvantages, showing the negative impact on the business
strategic objectives.
3.2 Lack of motivation
3.2.1 The case study mentions that staff have a lack of motivation due to the recent changes
made by Nina (lower pay, poor working conditions etc). Explain the importance of a
motivated workforce and identify what motivational theory is currently used to motivate
employees (currently no motivational theory is used) and whether all levels in Maslow’s
Hierarchy of Needs are met (higher tiers are not met). Bring in the data about employee
satisfaction, it has fallen dramatically. Discuss the negative impact of lack of motivation on
the business goals.
, 3.3 Net profit is decreasing (analysis of tables in the case study)
3.3.1 Use the tables in the case study to analyse the financial performance of the business,
there is an issue with net profit (fallen from £2.2m to £0.4m, 82% decrease). Link relevant
trends or negative performance to the impact on the strategic objectives.
3.4 Poor quality culture
3.4.1 Explain why there is a poor quality culture (staff avoiding routine inspections) and the
implications of this (cafe and ride closures). How does this impact the strategic objectives?
Poor ranking and low customer satisfaction due to closures? Profit falling due to high
costs of fixing major faults and loss of revenue from closures?
4. Proposals to address the current management issues
- The proposals directly correspond to the challenges you identified in the previous section. Create one
proposal for each challenge that you have identified.
(What actions could be taken by Saxon Fields - your proposals should be practical and realistic and follow
the order of the challenges mentioned above)
*You must justify each proposal and give logical reasons to how the proposal will solve the current
challenge and allow Saxon Fields to achieve its objectives
4.1 Democratic leadership style
4.1.1 Define Democratic leadership style, explain the advantages, how is this style better than
the current Autocratic style? How does this impact the strategic objectives?
4.2 Meet the higher levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
4.2.1 Define Maslow’s Hierarchy (if you haven’t already), explain how to meet the social and
esteem levels and describe the initiatives that can be implemented to meet these levels
(bring back social activities, implement a reward system). If these higher levels are met
and the workforce is motivated, what is the impact on the strategic objectives?
4.3 Six sigma
4.3.1 Six sigma can be used to reduce faults/closures and help increase net profit. Define the
six sigma (DMAIC) model. Explain how Saxon Fields must complete each stage of DMAIC
= define, measure, analyse, improve control. How does this reduce faults/closures? How
will lower faults/closures impact ranking, satisfaction and profit?
4.4 Quality circles
4.4.1 Define quality circles, and explain the advantages. Can mention that a competitor theme
park uses quality circles (stated at the end of the case study). Fosters a quality culture as
staff are empowered by putting forward ideas to improve aspects of the theme park.
Increases motivation, reduces faults/closures/unhappy customers, how does this impact
the strategic objectives?
For each proposal make sure you define, list the advantages, compare to how the business is currently run, what will
follow if the proposal is implemented and why? (higher motivation, lower costs etc), and state the impact on the
strategic objectives using logical reasoning.
