Assignment No: 1

 Describe the sliding filament theory, the size principle of motor unit
recruitment, and the all or none theory?
 When training a bodybuilder, why is an understanding of these three
principles necessary and how can they be applied when designing
training programs for bodybuilders?

The sliding filament theory, the size principle of motor unit recruitment,
and the all or none theory are three important principles that explain how
muscles contract and produce force.

Here is a brief summary of each principle:

 The sliding filament theory states that muscle contraction is
based on the sliding of myosin and actin filaments past each
other. When a muscle is stimulated, the myosin heads bind to the
actin filaments and pull them toward the centre of the
sarcomere, the basic unit of muscle structure.

 The size principle of motor unit recruitment states that motor
units, which are composed of a single motor neuron and the
muscle fibers it innervates, are recruited in order from smallest
to largest. This means that slow-twitch, low-force, fatigue-
resistant muscle fibers are activated first, followed by fast-twitch,
high-force, less fatigue-resistant muscle fibers. The size principle
allows the body to adjust the force output of a muscle according
to the demand of the task.

 The all or none theory states that the strength of a response
of a nerve cell or muscle fiber is not dependent upon the strength
of the stimulus. If a stimulus is below the threshold, there will be
no response. The all or none theory ensures that the action
potential, the electrical signal that travels along the nerve or
muscle fiber, is always a full response and does not degrade over
distance.

When training a bodybuilder, it is necessary to understand these three
principles and how they can be applied when designing training
programs.

Some of the applications are:

 To maximize muscle growth, bodybuilders need to stimulate both
slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscle fibers. This can be achieved by
using a variety of exercises, loads, rep ranges, and rest periods. For
