April 21st: Death of Henry VII, accession of Henry VIII without challenge-
Henry VII died on 21 April 1509 at Richmond Palace in Surrey. His death was due to
tuberculosis. Henry was buried in Westminster Abbey next to his wife, Elizabeth of
York

Proxy marriage of future Charles V of Austria to Princess Mary arranged- In
December 1508, Mary was married by proxy to Archduke Charles. For the next five
years, she was known as the Princess of Castile. On her brother's accession in 1509,
when Mary was thirteen, she became one of the leading figures at his court, close to
both Henry and her sister-in-law, Katharine of Aragon.
League of Cambrai set up- League of Cambrai, formed Dec. 10, 1508, an alliance
of Pope Julius II, the Holy Roman emperor Maximilian I, Louis XII of France, and
Ferdinand II of Aragon, ostensibly against the Turks but to attack the Republic of
Venice and divide its possessions among the allies. Left Henry very isolated

Lord Burgavenny convicted of illegal retaining and entered a bond to avoid
the £70,000 fine- In December 1507 George Neville, Lord Burgavenny, was fined
£70,650 for illegally retaining 471 men between 10 June 1504 and 9 December 1506.

The Earl of Suffolk was surrendered by Philip the Handsome- Philip the
Handsome, was ruler of the Burgundian Netherlands and titular Duke of Burgundy
from 1482 to 1506, as well as the first Habsburg King of Castile (as Philip I) for a brief
time in 1506. The son of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor and Mary of Burgundy,
Intercursus Malus- Henry and Phillip sign the treaty of Windsor in January 1506. He
recognised Philip as King of Castille, and the two rulers promised mutual defence and
assistance against each other’s rebels. By a second treaty, Philip pledged to marry his
sister, Margaret, now regent of the Netherlands, to Henry VII. In the April they
negotiates the Malus Intercurses which gives the English merchants considerable
advantages. It was decided that trade with Burgundy would be free, Philip would not
impose duties on sale of English cloth. He also got the Earl of Suffolk handed over to
him.
September: Death of Philip the Handsome-
Phillip of Burgundy has died. Joanna is mad with grief and deemed unfit to
rule. Ferdinand declares himself King of Castile.
Henry thought his best hope now was friendship between England, Netherlands and
France. It allowed Henry to end temporary disagreements over trade with Burgundy.
There were several plans for marriage alliances involving these countries,
with the intention of isolating Ferdinand in Spain.
