IOP2604
ASSIGNMENT 5 (SEMESTER 2)

DUE DATE: 26 OCTOBER 2023

QUESTION 1
a) Discuss how each of Thulani’s four basic psychological needs, as conceptualised by Grawe
(2007), was compromised and/or supported. (4)
ANSWER:

In Thulani's case, these needs were compromised and/or supported in the following ways:
1. Attachment: Thulani's need for attachment was significantly compromised. He was forcibly
separated from his family and community, which disrupted his primary attachment bonds.
This separation caused emotional distress, as he was unable to fulfill his need for social
connection and belonging.
2. Self-Esteem: Thulani's self-esteem was compromised due to the discrimination and
mistreatment he experienced. Being subjected to racial prejudice and apartheid policies
undermined his self-worth. He faced constant reminders of his inferior social status, which
negatively impacted his self-esteem.
3. Pleasure Principle: Thulani's ability to pursue pleasure and happiness was compromised by
the oppressive and discriminatory environment he lived in. He faced limitations on his
personal and recreational activities due to apartheid restrictions. These limitations restricted
his pursuit of happiness and pleasure.
4. Orientation towards Reality: Thulani's orientation towards reality was influenced by the
distorted reality created by apartheid policies. He was exposed to false ideologies that
justified racial segregation and discrimination. This distorted reality affected his perception
of the world and created cognitive dissonance.

b) Explain how Thulani’s wellness was affected, by referring to the eleven African roots of African
psychology (Nwoye, 2015). (11)
