, SECTION A: Short Paragraph Questions (60 marks)

Question 1

In two paragraphs and in your own words,

DEFINE what a POSTMODERN story is.

A postmodern story is a narrative style that emerged in the mid-20th century as a
reaction to the conventions of modernist literature. It is characterized by a deliberate
departure from traditional storytelling norms and a rejection of the idea that there is a
single, objective truth. Postmodern stories often blur the lines between reality and
fiction, challenging the reader's perceptions and expectations. They frequently
incorporate metafiction, where the story draws attention to its own artificiality and the
act of storytelling itself. This self-awareness can manifest in various ways, such as
characters breaking the fourth wall or narratives that loop back on themselves
(Hutcheon, 1988).

Postmodern stories also tend to be highly fragmented, featuring nonlinear plots and
a disjointed, non-chronological structure. They frequently explore themes of
relativism, subjectivity, and the instability of language and meaning. In postmodern
literature, there's a skepticism towards grand narratives and a celebration of diversity
and multiplicity. Postmodern authors often use intertextuality, referencing and
recontextualizing other works, and they may embrace pastiche, blending various
genres and styles. Overall, postmodern storytelling is characterized by its subversion
of traditional literary norms and its embrace of ambiguity, playfulness, and a sense of
the fluid and ever-shifting nature of reality.
