Lecture 4
Main complaints of patients with
diseases of respiratory system.
Inspection and palpation of the chest.

Pronko T.P.

, Respiratory system includes:
nasal cavity, pharynx,
larynx, trachea, bronchi,
lungs and pleura.
The upper airways include:
- the nasal cavity,
- the pharynx,
- larynx
- trachea
are differentiated from the
bronchi and the lungs.

, The main complaints of patients
with respiratory pathology:
chest pain,
dyspnea,
attacks of suffocation,
cough,
expectoration of sputum and blood.
Patients also complain of weakness, fever,
poor appetite, headache.

, Chest Pain
occurs commonly in cases where the pleura is affected by
inflammatory process. The pleura is rich in nerve endings.
Pleuritic pain is typically made worse by deep breathing or
coughing and may be controlled by immobilization of the
chest wall. The patient can usually identify the site of
pleuritic pain. If a pleural effusion develops, the pain may
disappear as the inflamed pleural surfaces are separated.
Chest wall trauma or a broken rib give chest pain, too.
A tumor infiltrating the chest wall may cause local pain or,
if it involves intercostal nerves, referred pain.
Herpes zoster, before the eruption appears, may present as
puzzling chest pain.
A deep-seated, vague lung ache occurs occasionally with a
lung abscess, tuberculous cavity, or giant bulla and may
arise from stretch receptors associated with pulmonary
vessels.
Pain arising from other respiratory structures is usually
less easy to characterize than pleuritic pain.
