Education gives knowledge, and knowledge gives wisdom. Great wisdom benefits
everyone. Dr. Jose Rizal believed that education is a vehicle for a country’s prosperity
and success, hence through the poem, he encouraged Filipinos to acquire education for
them to be able to fulfill their dreams and to improve their motherland. His high regard for
education was evident in his determination to seek the best education possible, even
across the shores of his country.
Personal Insights
Dr. Jose Rizal loved his Motherland. Despite his young age, he had expressed
high regard for education and believed in the significant role which education plays in the
progress and welfare of a nation, as clearly seen in this poem.
Rizal expresses that education is what builds up a country and allows education
to rise above the rest in matters of honor and a good name. He stated that from the time
of a man's birth to the moment of his death, he is constantly busy in the journey of
learning. This can come in the form of education or the essence of daily living. And in this
journey, people begin to discover and innovate, create and recreate, giving birth to great
discoveries and wonders. He said that education would provide calmness or peace to the
country. He said that knowledge and wisdom brightens and encourages the young. With
the use of education, they can identify errors and correct them. They can find fault in the
seemingly perfect noble knowledge and overpower it with the truth. They are well-
respected for the ideas they bring to the world.
A good education is also an effective solution to the problem of criminal acts and
unlawful pursuits. Even nations who wish nothing more than to divide, colonize and
control are silenced when they listen to the voice of wisdom, which stops hatred and
promotes the welfare of the people. Even savages or thugs turns into champions when
they are given a good education. Knowledge is like a spring that nourishes everything its
water touches. The spring of knowledge is endless. In education and enlightenment, man
can overcome the powers of evil through acquiring knowledge and climb the heavenly
ways. Gaining good wisdom enables man to expand his passion for good and continue
to avoid temptation. An educated man does not sway when hardships come. Education
provides the country with strong and respectable citizens who are ready to fight for honor
no matter the cost. The achievements of an educated man are not forgotten as he passes
his wisdom on to other generations and sets a good example for the youth. Rizal also
stresses the great importance of a Christian education, which he obviously considers an
essential cornerstone. The poem ends in a splash of color as Rizal compares a good
education to the lights of the sun and the aurora. Great wisdom has no favorites as young
and old benefit from it and is amused in its joys. Rizal closes the verse with an image of
his country with the sun overhead, a sun that embodies the virtues and wonders of a good
education, which he dreams for every citizen to enjoy.
