, What motivates people to do volunteer work

Abstract

This qualitative research aims to explore and understand what motivates people to do
volunteer work at Ga-Rankuwa giving their time, energy and skills without expecting
compensation. More focus being on to comprehend motivations for volunteer work.
Volunteers are an important human resource for many organisations. Motivations to
volunteer are attributed to many factors. This research study will share valuable and rich
information about what motivates people to do volunteer work.“While the number of
volunteers in South Africa continues to increase, statistics show that the overall time
spent in volunteer activities has progressively decreased in recent years. The aim of this
study is to highlight the important role that volunteerism plays in our country and to
understand what drives volunteering. The qualitative study used thematic analysis and
data was obtained through semi structured interviews. Three research participants were
selected via purposive sampling method. The literature on intrinsic, extrinsic and
egoistic rewards as well as various models developed to explain volunteer motivations
are discussed together with the empathy-altruism hypothesis. The findings of this
research study suggest that the primary motivations of volunteerism are altruistic and
egoistic and express the need to give back to society”.
