Guided Reflection Questions
Opening Questions
How did the simulated experience of Brenda Patton’s case make you feel? For this simulation I got it right the 2nd time around. I was more confident going in after being exposed to this type of simulation. I had a better sense of where to find things and how to do them. Overall, it went well.
Describe the actions you felt went well in this scenario. Communicating with the patient went well as this is extremely important. Nurses tend to dive right in and do things that are second nature to us, but we must keep in mind that these things are not normal for the patient. Hence, the reason why educating and explaining what we are doing is so important in developing a nurse-patient relationship.
Scenario Analysis Questions1
EBPWhat complications can occur if group B streptococcus is not treated? If not treated intrapartum, there is a higher risk of the fetus being infected and getting septic, meningitis, or pneumonia.
PCCWhat should be included in the priority teaching for Brenda Patton? Ms. Patton’s priority teaching will be the complications that can occur to her baby if GBS is not treated appropriately.
T&CWhat key elements would you include in the handoff report for this patient? Consider the situation-background-assessment-recommendation (SBAR) format. Situation: Ms. Patton is an 18 y/o primigravida at 38 2/7 weeks of gestation, admitted to L&D for labor assessment.
Background: Patient states that her water may have broken earlier this morning. AmniSure and GBS are positive. NKDA. 5 million IU of penicillin IV is infusing in her left forearm. IV site has no redness, swelling, infiltration, bleeding or drainage. The dressing was dry and intact. Vaginal exam reveals 50% effacement of cervix, cervical dilation 4cm, and fetus at -2 station.
1The Scenario Analysis Questions are correlated to the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies: Patient-Centered Care (PCC), Teamwork and Collaboration (T&C), Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), Quality Improvement (QI), Safety (S), and Informatics (I).
