Hospital acquired infection prevention programs look to reduce or even eliminate hospital associated infections, also known as healthcare associated infections. Healthcare associated infections are infections that a patient contracts while receiving care for a different condition (Office of Infectious Disease & HIV/AIDS Policy, n.d). These infections can occur in hospitals or other healthcare facilities such as surgical centers or long-term care facilities (Office of Infectious Disease & HIV/AIDS Policy, n.d). These infections are a major concern for healthcare as they can lead to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. The number of
patients that acquire healthcare associated infections in the United States each year is more than a half-million (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d). The types of infections focused on are central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), surgical site infection (SSI), ventilator-associated pneumonia (V AP), clostridioides difficile (c-diff), and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (Centers for Disease Control and Preventions, 2014). The costs for these programs can include staffing an infection prevention nurse. It is their responsibility to implement and monitor infection prevention protocols and policies, conduct surveillance, and provide education to staff. Other costs include providing education for staff, having appropriate personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies and patient education. A study that looked at the average cost annually of infection prevention programs was projected to cost $161,000 per hospital (Dick et al., 2015). The outcomes of these programs are aimed at reducing infection rates, providing education to patients and staff, and lower healthcare costs.
