Basics of Statics

Force
 Force, in mechanics, any action that tends to maintain or alter
the motion of a body.
 Its Representation:
Magnitude
Direction
Point of application
Line of action
 Classification
Collinear
Concurrent
Parallel
Non-concurrent non parallel
Collinear Force
 Collinear forces are forces that have a common line of action,
i.e., the line of action of the forces lie along a single straight
line

, Concurrent Force
 If the forces applied to a body are such that their lines of action
meet at a single point, then they are called concurrent forces.
Resultant of multiple forces on a body can be found using triangle
and parallelogram law of vector addition and simplifies the
problem solving by finding the net force on the particle.

Parallel Force

 The forces whose lines of action are parallel to each other are
known as parallel forces. They do not meet at one point i.e. Non-
concurrent force. The parallel forces may be broadly classified
into the following two categories depending their direction
 There are two types of parallel force

i. LIKE PARALLEL FORCES: The forces whose lines
of action are parallel to each other and all of them
act in the same direction are known as like parallel
forces.
ii. UNLIKE PARALLEL FORCES: The forces whose
lines of actions are parallel to each other and all of
them do not act in the same direction are known as
unlike parallel forces.
