Virtualization Methods 2
SAMENVATTING
ICT-HBO 2DE JAAR PERIODE 4

,Week 1: Introduction to Cloud Automation
A definition of Cloud

Cloud Computing is an approach to computing that leverages the efficient pooling of on-
demand, self-managed virtual infrastructure, consumed as a service.

Why cloud?

 Flexibility
 Disaster recovery
 Automatic software updates
 Capital-expenditure Free
 Increased collaboration
 Work from anywhere

Cloud deployment models

 Public cloud
 Private cloud
 Hybrid cloud
 Community cloud
 Virtual Private cloud
 Inter cloud

Cloud characteristics

 On-demand self-service
 Broad network access
 Resource pooling
 Rapid elasticity
 Measured service

Cloud service models

IaaS  Infrastructure as a Service: Outsourcing the equipment used to support operations,
including storage, hardware servers and network
components
PaaS  Platform as a Service : Delivering operating systems over the internet
SaaS  Software as a Service : Application are hosted by a vendor or service provider and
made available to customers over a network
SeCaaS  Security as a Service : a large service provider integrates their security services into
a corporate infrastructure on a subscription basis
STaaS  Storage as a Service
DRaaS  Disaster Recovery as a Service

What is Cloud Automation?

Automation extends to the software layer, where complex systems can be configured once
and then rolled out on the fly as needed, using cloud automation tools.

,Why Cloud Automation?: (Complexity, Inefficiency, Inflexibility)

• We spend too much time and money managing our data centers…
• Our independent operating units need to be efficient and respond to customers….
• How can we efficiently provide the mission with the agility they need and maintain
security?

What is needed for Cloud Automation?: Cloud provisioning

Cloud provisioning is the allocation of a cloud provider’s resources to a customer.

Cloud provisioning: Automated provisioning

is the ability to deploy an information technology or telecommunications service by using
pre-defined procedures that are carried out electronically without requiring human
intervention.

Cloud provisioning: De-provisioning

The removal of access privilege and system resources for an employee, contractor or
business partner.

Cloud provisioning: Over-provisioning

Allocating more resources than required, should be avoided as the service provider often has
to pay for the resources that are allocated to the service.

Cloud provisioning: Under-provisioning

Allocating fewer resources than required, must be avoided, otherwise the service cannot
serve its users with a good service.

Cloud allocation models

• Pay-as-you-go Model : Is a payment method for cloud computing that charges
based on usage
• Reservation-Pool Model : All of the resources you allocate are immediately committed
to the organization virtual datacenter
• Allocation-Pool Model : A percentage of the resources you allocate from the
provider virtual datacenter are committed to the
organization virtual datacenter

, Week 2: Concepts of Software Defined
A definition of Software Defined

Software-defined represents a new class of products where the software is the focus and is
used to provide the solution rather than the hardware.

Characteristics of Software Defined related to IT Infrastructure

a Software-Defined Environment (SDE) optimizes the entire computing infrastructure –
compute, storage and network resources – so that it can adapt to the type of work required.
In today's environment, resources are assigned manually to workloads; that happens
automatically in a SDE.

Traditional Computer Networks

 Operating a network is expensive
 Buggy software in the equipment
 The network is “in the way”
 Vertically integrated stack with 1 control and data plane

Death to the Control Plane!

 Simpler management
 Faster pace of innovation
 Easier interoperability
 Simpler, cheaper equipment

Software Defined Networking (SDN)

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging architecture that is dynamic,
manageable, cost effective, and adaptable, making it ideal for the high bandwidth, dynamic
nature of today's applications. This architecture decouples the network control and
forwarding functions enabling the network control to become directly programmable and the
underlying infrastructure to be abstracted for applications and network services.

SDN Architecture

 Directly programmable
 Agile
 Centrally managed
 Programmatically configured
 Open standards-based and vendor neutral
