Synaptic TransmissionProcess by which neighbouring neurons communicate by sending chemical messages across
the synapse that separates them.
Neurotransmitter - Brain chemicals released from synaptic
vessels that relay signals across the synapse from one neuron to
another. Can be divided into those that perform excitatory
function and those that perform inhibitory function.
Excitation - Increase positive charge of the postsynaptic
neuron. Increases the likelihood the postsynaptic neuron will
pass on the electrical impulses.
Inhibition - Increases the negative charge of the postsynaptic
neuron. Decreasing the likelihood of a postsynaptic neuron will
pass on the electrical impulse.
1. Action potential travels down the axon, arriving at the
presynaptic terminal.
2. Arrival results in neurotransmitters being released into the synapse.
3. Neurotransmitters travel to connect neurons via the synapse.
4. Neurotransmitters absorbed by post-synaptic neurons will be absorbed by the
original neuron, a process called reuptake.
