QUESTION 1
1.1)
Characteristics of a good Social Science Teacher:
Having rich content knowledge of Geography and History:
Content knowledge is fundamentally important for teaching any subject. Content knowledge is
referred to as disciplinary knowledge or subject matter content knowledge. The disciplinary
nature of Social Sciences can raise some content knowledge complications. While the two
subjects are related, they are not the same. Therefore, it is crucial that you are willing and able
to develop your content knowledge in both History and Geography otherwise you will struggle
to facilitate learning in a guided manner and will also be unable to make connections between
the geographical and historical aspects of Social Sciences.
Having wide general knowledge:
Although knowledge of History and Geography content is essential characteristics of the Social
Sciences teacher, a good teacher should also be able to make that content relevant and easier
to digest. A characteristic that can enable this is having a wealth of general knowledge. While
content knowledge is specific to a subject, general knowledge transcends, and also blends,
History and Geography.
Having a strong conceptual understanding:
Teachers should go beyond the construction of content knowledge. Teachers should have a
strong conceptual understanding in order to help develop learners’ understanding. A good
balance can be established if Social Sciences teachers’ clearly understand the relationships
between content and thinking processes.
Understanding human interaction:
The geographical and historical nature of the Social Sciences subject implies that it deals largely
with human interaction in space over time. This means that Social Sciences teacher should have
a sound understanding of the nature of humans and their interaction with other humans or
with the environment in space and time. If learners can develop in interaction with each other,
with the teacher and with the space in the classroom, they will have a foundation for
understanding human interaction in History and Geography.
Being open to multiple perspectives
Having multiple perspectives relates to the nature of the Social Sciences subject, which is filled
with contentious content. Learners will have to be exposed to contending views about the
content that they study. The teacher should be open to multiple perspectives of the content
that they teach and to the multiple perspectives that come from the learners in the class. This

helps the learners to confidently contribute, knowing that their contributions will be taken into
consideration.
Relying on evidence:
The Social Science teacher should rely on the use of evidence. You should always be able to
substantiate what you bring to class. It is your role as a teacher to make the learners realise
that they should have evidence for their different understandings of issues so that they can
always defend their responses with substantiation. If you expect learners to defend their
positions, then you also should not make contentious statements without backing them up with
evidence.

1.2)
Dawson’s theory of historical significance:

• Changed events at the time they lived
• Improved the lives of many people or made them worse
• Changes people’s ideas
• Had long-lasting impact on their country or the world
• Were a really good or a very bad example to other people of how to live or behave

1.3)
Inquiry learning is when students construct their own knowledge, incorporating new knowledge
into constructs already established in the student’s mind. The teacher works with the student,
developing the learning together, thus ensuring a much better chance for the teacher to
understand how the student is putting the ideas together and helping the student direct their
learning to explore meaningful concepts and ideas.
There are many ways to apply inquiry learning in your class such as using the techniques,
brainstorming, whole class discussions on a topic and role playing.
