How might the context in which knowledge is presented influence
whether it is accepted or rejected? (Knowledge and human
sciences)

Candidate code:
Word count: 950

, Often, one’s judgement of a knowledge is impacted by implicit biases that are not apparent
unless carefully observed 1. Through my three objects, I will explore how the context in which
knowledge is presented invokes such biases.

Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela from the library

This is an autobiography in our school library of the first black South African president
Nelson Mandela whose public perception drastically changed over time. This book elaborates
on how Mandela was frequently targeted as an antiapartheid activity by his government
before his rise to icon status. As described in the autobiography, he was restricted in travel,
association, and speech. Before becoming a national hero, he was deemed a terrorist,2 being
on terror watch lists until 2008.3 After decades of imprisonment, he became president of
South Africa and arguably one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. As shown
by this autobiography, the way a political leader can be perceived differently according to the
trends of the time exemplifies the influence of context on our approach to knowledge.

On this premise, the narrative that the media creates can influence the public opinion.
Considering that most tend to be uncritical toward the information they are presented with,
without researching to verify each piece of information, the change in how Mandela was
perceived over time corresponds to a change in the political context4. This can be explained
