Colorectal cancer is a disease that begins when cells located in the body’s colon or

rectum produce abnormal growths or polyps. A colorectal screening test can identify

precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer and spread.

The earlier colon cancer is diagnosed, the better the treatment options and outcomes

(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, 2023).

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States,

claiming the lives of over 51,000 people, as well as over 142,000 new cases being

diagnosed in 2019. Kansas ranks among the highest in our nation for incidence of new

colorectal cancer cases with 1,366 cases reported in 2019 (CDC, 2023).

Colorectal Cancer Overview

The CDC (2023) recommends adults beginning at age 45 to 75 be regularly

screened for colorectal cancer. Those over the age of 75 can be determined on an

individual basis, as well as those with family history to begin at an earlier age and be

screened more often. There are several screening tests available including an annual

guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) and a fecal immunochemical test (FIT)

whose specimens can be obtained at home and taken to a provider for testing. Visual

exams such as the standard colonoscopy are performed every 10 years with follow ups

an individual basis depending on findings and risk factors.

If a person is symptomatic, they should be screened as soon as possible,

regardless of age. Many people have colorectal polyps and are not aware of them. Some
