, of this paper is to describe Kenya and define the health issue of human immunodeficiency virus

(HIV). I will then, describe which of the social determinants of health are impacting this health

issue. Lastly, I will describe the global health indicators used to identify this health issue as a

priority.



Country and Health Issue

Kenya is a developing country in East Africa where there is a large population who lives

in poverty. Majority of the population in Kenya are dealing with high burdens of infectious

diseases and poor living conditions. One of the leading health issues in Kenya is the prevalence

of HIV cases reported for the country. The country of Kenya has the joint third largest human

immunodeficiency virus epidemic in the world. This epidemic is due to the poverty rates in

Kenya, lack of resources, and decreased access to health care. In Kenya there are 1.6 million

people living with HIV and more than half who are unaware that they are living with this disease

(Avert, 2020). The populations most at risk for HIV transmission are intravenous drug users, sex

workers, and men who engage in sexual acts with men. People in Kenya face large amounts of

discrimination and stigma regarding HIV. This makes it more difficult for those infected with

HIV to seek treatment due to this judgement. In order to decrease the number of new HIV cases,

this country needs better access to resources on education.



SDOH Impacting Health Issue

The social determinants of health that are barriers to HIV care are unemployment, lower

income, transportation costs, and other poverty indicators (Mûnene & Ekman, 2015). The people

in Kenya are directly affected by economic stability, education, and healthcare. HIV prevalence

relates to decreased economic stability based around limited economic opportunities and
