Modernism and the nuclear family

- Modernists theories → functionalism and New Right views
- Due to the view that modern society is fairly fixed, clear cut with a predictable
structure
- View that the nuclear family is the ‘best’ family type
Functionalism
● Parsons
- ‘Functional fit’ between the nuclear family and modern society
- The nuclear family can meet the needs of modern society through a
geographically/socially mobile workforce
- ‘Irreducible functions’ → primary socialisation of children and stabilisation
of adult personalities
- Due to the family performing these functions, the nuclear family can be
generalised
- Other family types might be seen as dysfunctional, abnormal/deviant since they
may not perform these functions
The New Right
- Conservative and anti-feminist perspective → oppose family diversity
- Correct family type → conventional/traditional nuclear family
- Has to consist of a married couple (with a gender division of labour) and
dependable children
- Similar to the functionalist view → expressive and instrumental roles
- Family is ‘natural’ and based on biological differences
- Family is the cornerstone of society → place of refuge, contentment and
harmony
- Oppose family diversity/change → Cohabitation, same-sex etc
- Family diversity = causes many social problems
