PART 2; CHAPTER 10: Packaging and Handling
Packaging is either viewed as consumer, primarily focused on marketing, or
industrial, focused on logistics. Containers used to group individual products are
master cartons; when combined into larger units they can be referred to as
containerization or unitization. When these are grouped altogether for handling they
become a unit load.
Packaging for Handling Efficiency
Package Design
Cube minimization is most important for lightweight products such as assembled
lawn furniture that cubes out a transport vehicle before weight limits are reached.
Containerization or Unitization
The concept includes product grouping, from taping two master cartons altogether to
using specialized transportation equipment. The basic objective is to increase
handling and transport efficiency.
Rigid Devices
These devices provide an enclosure within which master cartons or loose products are
unitized. It ensures that products inside a sealed container will both protect them and
facilitate handling. Benefits include:
• Improves overall material movement efficiency
• Reduces damage in handling and transit, protective packaging requirements,
and pilferage
• Greater protection for element environment
• Provides a shipment unit, thereby reducing waste and need to dispose
container
Flexible Devices
The most common non-rigid utilization is stacked master cartons on either pallets
(made out of wood) or slip-sheets.
