Assessment 4: Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators
Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators
Hello, my name is Elisabeth Hulme, from Pride Clinic; I am a member of the institution’s quality improvement council. Due to changes in the modern era, we know that the nursing practice requires that we are objective in our approaches concerning patient care. It is the nurse's responsibility to be duly informed, and this can be achieved if the nurse can quantify the quality of work. The quality of work can be quantified using a predetermined metric that can be used to analyze any nursing-related intervention. These metrics are generally referred to as the Nursing Quality Sensitive Indicators (NDNQI); several parameters can be used to assess the quality of service. For today's discussion, we are going to tackle pain management as one of the quality indicators.
In addition, we will discuss why pain management as an ideal quality-sensitive indicator and why a practicing nurse should be conversant with what it entails. We will discuss how information on pain management is collected and analyzed for further interventions. We will also look at the nurse's role in facilitating these interventions to improve the quality of care outcomes.
Definition of NDNQI
NDNQI’s are objective parameters within patient care that can be actively assessed to quantify the level of quality of a nursing intervention (Meissner et al., 2017) . The main aim of using this metric is to validate the practice of nursing as an evidence-based profession that relies on data to intervene objectively, as the impact of the intervention is continuously assessed (Meissner et al., 2017) . Currently, there is a national database from which my health
facility can voluntarily gain evidenced-based data of surveys from registered nurses (RN) on nursing-sensitive quality indicators, leading to job satisfaction and the improved practice environment. Nursing-Sensitive Quality Indicators
Nurse Sensitive Quality Indicators serve a crucial function other than being used as a metric for analyzing the quality of care; it is used to research the trends of changing quality outcomes following nursing interventions (Meissner et al., 2017) . These findings from these inquiries generate knowledge that can inform policy changes that improve nurses' patient satisfaction and work satisfaction. In addition, quality indicators can be integrated into quality
management systems, which can actively monitor and maintain control of the health system's primary segments. Consequently, measures are objectively designed to adjust the state of care
to improve care in institutions (Gao et al., 2018).
Pain Management
I will tackle pain management as part of the quality indicators used in the nursing practice. Pain is a subjective experience that encompasses various elements; that is, the patient can only report pain to the healthcare professional. There is no objective measure of the quality or the intensity of the pain (Meissner et al., 2017) . Therefore, the experience of pain relies on the healthcare professionals' ability to identify and intervene using either non-
pharmacological or pharmacological therapy. Nurses are required to address all strategies at their disposal to minimize the experience of pain because it is an unpleasant experience, and it may directly influence the patient's overall satisfaction (Sandvik et al., 2020) .
Importance of Monitoring Pain
A study from Miller et al. (2016) suggests that identifying and monitoring pain is by far the most important aspect of care for patients, especially for nurses, who are the first point
of contact for most of these patients. They add that a good rapport has to be established to allow patients to comfortably report changes in pain, which can be used to assess the efficacy
of treatment or other interventions accurately. This form of monitoring would be used concurrently to assess the quality of care the patient is getting from the health care team.
