An operating system is a program that manages and controls the
computer. Operating systems have many functions.
 Controlling hardware components
 Providing a platform for software to run on
 Providing a user interface
 Managing the computer’s memory
 Managing peripherals
 Managing files

User interface is what we see on the screen and how we
interact with the computer. This is very important as a poor
interface could mean a operating system isn’t successful.
The user interacts with the operating system with:
 Command Line Interface
(Text based. E.g. DOS, Raspbian)
 Graphical User Interface
(Contains Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointers)


Process Management
Process management may allocate a small ‘time slice’ to each
separate process so that it appears that many processes are
taking place at the same time (multitasking).
Memory Management
The OS allocates memory between the different programs that
are open at the same time
