Dream entails always striving for something more than what we already have. Gatsby
embodies this in his constant wanting for Daisy, despite the decadent wealth that he is
always accumulating.
Explain the theme of money as presented in the novel
In the eyes of Gatsby, wealth is simply a means at which he can use to obtain Daisy,
and it does not necessarily bring him any joy. His "new money" also exemplifies that
money cannot buy class. In Daisy's and Tom's case, money makes them careless and
cruel, as they believe money will protect them forever ("Clean up the mess they made").
What kind of people are Tom and Daisy?
Careless, selfish people, who "smash up people and things and then retreat into their
money."
How do all the characters know each other?
Daisy is Nick's cousin who meets Tom because he is Daisy's husband and Jordan
because she is Daily's friend. Nick meets Gatsby because they are neighbors, who
knows Daisy and Tom because he once had an affair with her. Tom knows George
Wilson. Tom has an affair with Wilson's wife, Myrtle, who knows Daisy because she is
Tom's wife. Nick is introduced to Myrtle.
What is Nick symbolic of in the novel?
Nick represents how much the American dream can change people. Nick, when he first
