CHEM 1007 (CHEM1007)
Institution
University Of South Australia (UNISA
)
These notes provide a comprehensive overview of key concepts and principles in the chemistry generally taught in the second semester of first year of university. The notes cover all topics taught in CHEM 1007. Each topic is presented in a clear and concise manner, making it easy to understand and r...
Class syllabus for 2020 – all content
This is a very brief outline of the very important points in each lecture.
However if something is in a lecture even if it is not mentioned here it is still
examinable, this is just a guide to direct your learning.
Introduction to organic chemistry
• Revision of drawing a Lewis Structure, electronegativity series, what organic is.
• Be able to draw a skeletal structure
• Name a straight chain alkane
Functional group recognition
• Recognise a functional group
• Relate physical properties to structure (know the intermolecular forces)
• Predict solubility of compounds based on their structure (‘like dissolves like’)
• Rank molecules according to boiling point
• Know that all salts and molecules with H-bonding sites that are less than 4 carbons are water
soluble
Purification methods to underpin organic chemistry practicals
• Know what a stationary and mobile phase are
• Predict movement on a TLC plate based on polarity
• Understand why compounds move on a TLC plate (experiment 1)
• Name straight chain alkane, alkene and alkyne
• Be able to recognise an sp, sp2 or sp3 atom based on shape
Newman Projections
• Draw Newman projections, identify staggered vs eclipsed forms
• Understand steric strain (larger groups have electron repulsion this causes steric strain).
Naming alkyl halides and alcohols
• Be able to name alkyl halide and alcohol
• Physical properties of alkanes, alcohols
• Be able to name branched chain structures
• Be able to classify carbons, alkyl halides and alcohols as 1o, 2o, 3o (or 4o tetrahedral carbons
only)
More complex naming and functional group recognition
• Be able to name and recognise an ethers, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, ester, amide
and amines
• Physical properties of alcohols, carboxylic acid and amides
• Recognise and classify 1o, 2o, 3o and 4o amines
• Recognise the sulphur and phosphate containing functional groups
Purification based on solubility of acids and bases
• Define acid + base using Bronsted-Lowry theory
• Know in which form a carboxylic acid or amine will be water soluble and how to make them
water soluble
• Know and describe how to purify a compound using liquid-liquid extraction.
