Unit 18 work experience in active leisure
B: Undertake a job application process for an active leisure work experience placement

Application process.

A job or employment gives people money and other benefits, like job satisfaction and achievements
in working life. People work to earn money which they use to support their lifestyle, pay for housing
cars, food and socialising. To get a job you need to apply to the organisation or company that has a
role that interests you but also that you are qualified for.

Available jobs can be found in different ways some are advertised online or in job centre’s others are
industry related and jobs can be viewed on specific career websites organisations or associations like
sport massage therapists who can find jobs through their membership to the association, the UK
government has links to jobs that need more employees like the NHS. Some available jobs can be
discovered by word of mouth. For example, someone who works for the organisation or company
could tell friends and family there is a role available. When an appropriate job has been found the
application process is the first step to apply for a job that you would like to work in.

For my work experience I decided that I would like to return to my old school and assist the staff in
the PE department so I searched online for jobs in a school that would fit what I wanted to do. I
found a job description online and decided that it would suit me if I was going to apply for the job
after completing university because I would have more qualifications after going to uni.

The websites I used were indeed.com and total jobs.com. I also googled job titles that interest me
and found some school websites that were advertising jobs for the school. The local council of some
schools also had available jobs and information from Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset.

The advert that I found was for a sports coach at a school in Bournemouth which is local to my home
address. My local school did not have any jobs available that I could use so I found one that was
similar. I decided that the job description was suitable to me and that I have most of the quality’s
that were listed. I do not have the correct qualifications because I have not yet completed my sport
coaching degree but if I had now left university this is a job I would apply for. Level 2 sport coaching
was listed in the qualifications with or without a degree but I think a degree would give more chance
of being successful when other applicants may have more experience and higher qualifications and
could also be asked to a interview. To have a better chance of getting the job it is important to apply
for a job that you have the qualifications for and personal skills and experience. There will be others
who are also applying and that is the competition on the day. If the application isn’t filled in properly
it will go to the bottom of the pile and there will be less chance of being asked for an interview.
Checking all the details are correct is important as most employers don’t get in touch unless you are
being invited to an interview, if the details are incorrect and they can’t get in touch it is a missed
opportunity and you may think you were not shortlisted, the CV should have all relevant information
to show the employer including qualifications, experience and personal qualities that make you
more suitable then other people applying for the same job. Preparation for the interview should be
very thorough, investigating the role and thinking of questions to ask that are relevant will help you
stand out from others.
