Paul Thomas Mann (6 juni 1875-1955) wordt beschouwd als een van de
grootste Duitse schrijvers van de 20e eeuw. Zijn bekendste werken zijn de
romans "Buden Brooks" en "Magic Mountain", en de novelle "Death in
Venice". Zijn werk werd beïnvloed door Goethe, Nietzsche en
Schopenhauer. In 1929 ontving hij de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur. Hij ging
naar Italië, waar hij veel inspiratie opdeed voor zijn boek. Toen hij aan
tuberculose leed, haalde hij andere inspiratie uit het behandelcentrum in
Davos. Rond 1930 verzette Mann zich tegen nationalisme. In 1936 vluchtte
hij naar Zwitserland om zich bij het Duitse Nazi-regime aan te sluiten, mede
omdat zijn vrouw Katia Mann als jood werd beschouwd. Thomas Mann
woonde van 1939 tot 1952 in de Verenigde Staten, waar hij de belangrijkste
vertegenwoordiger van de antifascistische strijd werd, en woonde daarna tot
aan zijn dood in Zwitserland.

Hermann Hesse is samen met Thomas Mann en Stefan Zweig,
een van de meest gelezen Duitstalige auteurs van de 20e eeuw. De
auteur is geboren in 1877 in Schwaben, Calw. Zijn boeken zijn in
meer dan 60 talen vertaald en er zijn wereldwijd ongeveer 150
miljoen exemplaren van zijn werken. De Duitse edities nemen
hiervan slechts een zesde voor hun rekening. Tijdens de Tweede
Wereldoorlog trad hij op tegen de nazi-partij. Na de oorlog woonde
hij ook in Amerika. Zijn eerste romans, waaronder "Peter
Camenzind" en "Beneath the Wheel", waren een vroeg succes. Hij
verwierf nog meer bekendheid dankzij de werken die hij na de
Eerste Wereldoorlog publiceerde, zoals "Demian", Steppenwolf",
"Narcisuss zijn late leerwerk "The Glass Bead "Game" (of "Magister
Ludi"). In 1946 kreeg hij de Nobelprijs. Hij stierf in 1962 in zijn
geadopteerde dorp Montagnola in het Zwitserse kanton Ticino.
