- TCO's ~ Professor .....
Wal-Mart

Class,

Welcome to our second threaded discussion! This thread is more typical of what our
discussions will look like the rest of the term. Each week there will be two threads
related to our TCOs (Terminal Course Objectives).

This week the TCOs we are focusing on are:

• TCO #1: Given a description of a typical business, demonstrate how that business
acts within our economic system to achieve its goals as well as those of society, along
with an understanding of how the future may impact these goals.

• TCO #4: Given understanding of entrepreneurship, be able to describe the
major elements necessary for success, along with an understanding of the
potential risks associated with starting a business venture.

Now, let’s get started!! Be sure to take the time to view Perform an Internet search

Walmart, the revolutionary retail giant that has a global economy at its fingertips is
arguably the most influential & powerful retailer in the world. Being the global
retailing powerhouse does have its pros & cons. Does Walmart raise or lower our
standards of living & does it play fair? I think it decreases via indirect & direct
economical influences & only cares about #1, its own survival & the money of the
shareholders. It is a business after all isn't it?

Walmart comes to town & opens up hundreds of jobs for the neighborhood, town, or city it reside

,in. One would say this is good as now people are employed, unemployment rates
drop, & the money earned is then re-invested into the local economy. Yes,
unemployment rates drop, but the wage earned is minimum wage only. Minimum
wage workers only have limited discretionary capital to spend. Meaning they don't
have enough to buy what they want only what they need.
What they need can mostly likely be purchased back at Walmart. Unless your a
student living in home & just want to work or need to work part time then you can
afford to inject your earnings into the local economy by eating out, movie theaters,
etc. This does not increase our standard of living. When you have an employer that
uses minimal wage at all levels of employment then your societies median income
wage tends to be lower. Society benefits from the fruit of industries that can afford to
pay a higher wage thus increasing the local economy through an increased available
amount of income to be spent however.

Walmart is only fair to the manufacturers who are the lowest overhead cost for them.
The cheaper the product Walmart can then in turn retail for pennies on the dollar &
continue to make its money through volume purchases not quality purchases. It does
not help the American manufacturers & keeps us floating or sinking in our foreign
trade debt. By outsourcing to other countries for products & services we cripple our
nations economy which will then have a trickle effect upon us. Prices could raise due
to supply & demand theories or just American manufacturers trying to capitalize on a
few dollars to stay afloat against the overseas competition. In short, you don't buy
American, you cripple America, your screw over your fellow man an women who
depended on that American job for their family. From there you can see endless
negative impacts upon our nation.

This is very true. Well put.

I have been on the fence about Wal-Mart for a long time. I have several friends that
will not step foot inside of a Wal-Mart. I think the specifics on how the Wal-Mart
could raise or lower living standards would hinge on location. If your location was
directly affected by Wal-Mart opening, then it possibly have a negative effect. On the
other hand, my personal experience is a higher standard of living. Given the sheer
amount of items I can purchase at the local Super Wal-Mart. The items I am buying
may not be the same quality as a different retailer with a different manufacturer,
however on plenty of items that Wal-Mart sells it is unnecessary for me.

I think recent events would show even Wal-Mart has started to question their
business strategy, & the lack of support for US manufacturing. I had read about Wal-
Mart committing 250 billion dollars over several years towards US Manufacturing. I
can't find the specific article I had previously read, however I was able to find this
one about Mike Rowe getting harassed for supporting Wal-Mart's decision. (Mike
Rowe is the star of the show Dirty Jobs). Hopefully this show of support will be a
move back to local manufacturing for Wal-Mart, & other large retailers.

, Well lets hope they actually support US amnufacturing. A Social Entrprenuer
probably got involved & highlighted this practice forcing WALMART to reconsider
there logistic & operational strategies.

I doubt it was a social entrepreneur who got involved, I don't think that is really their
lane. I would imagine some sort of Business PR specialist with enough clout probably
weighed in on it.

I have to agree, hoping they support the US manufacturing is a long shot. In all
reality the amount that they committed was going to be spread across several years,
& when you look at the input/output of Wal-Mart it wasn't a very drastic number. My
best guess is this is just a numbers game & that in the end it won't change much.

You have a strong point & I have also been on the fence about Wal-Mart. I will
never work for a Wal-Mart store. Some insurance companies will not allow you to go
to an eye doctor in Wal-Mart

I rather think this is a loaded question. By keeping there cost down, ( using foreign
labor ect.) they are able to provide goods cheaper for the consumer. This in turn
keeps the standard of living possible by keeping the overall cost of living down.
Lower costs increases the demand of there products which in turn allows the
company to invest there economic gains into the future of the company. Walmarts
business model works in America because the country overall has shifted to a
serves market. If walmart tried to only sell products made in America, our selections
would be limited & the items would be more expensive. This in turn would decrease
the amount of employees they could employee. This would cause a decrease int he
standard of living because of the rising unemployment rate.

I agree because lower costs are what WE the consumers want. We as consumers are able
to control a healthy competition between retailers. The American market only exists
because of variety, that's with products & prices. With more expensive products there
would be less Americans (even those working for Wal-Mart) able to afford products in
return causing less monies to be generated into the economy.
