Personality Psychology

PSYC2020A
Words: 1818

Talia Liebovitz
UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND

, While the concept of personally is generally understood from a Eurocentric /Western
perspective, alternate perspectives, such as African personality psychology, has begun to define
personality using socio-culturally political factors. Through this essay the definition of
personality psychology, specifically through the eyes of African centered writers, Kleins
traditional psychoanalytic theory and concepts of object relations, and finally Fanon’s principles
in relation to the colonised subject and the racial struggle of recent generations will be critically
explained and analysed.

The word “personality” is often used to describe other people and oneself. Personality is defined
as a person's attributes and qualities that make up and separate them from others. It is also what
makes that person unique, for example, in regard to their likes, dislikes, fears, strengths, and
weaknesses (Susman, 2022). Concerns about the relative impact of personal traits and needs on
behaviour, as well as needs against variables relevant to the context within psychology, arose
throughout the 1960s. The issue was only resolved after roughly twenty years through
acceptance of an interactionist paradigm (Schultz & Schultz, 2017). To provide a complete
explanation for human nature, it was acknowledged that persistent and stable personal
characteristics, changing features of the context, and their interaction must be addressed (Schultz
& Schultz, 2017).

After decades of neglect, the idea that one's personality is not solely influenced by their genes,
but also their environment, was established in the 1960's, namely Cross-Cultural psychology.
Cultural variances influence personality development along with human nature's image and
queries (Schultz & Schultz, 2017). For example, according to studies, there are significant
cultural disparities between the East and the West when it comes to the concepts of what fate is,
what it entails, and if one has a destiny.

During a study on brain activities and genetic composition of different cultures, measurements of
brain wave activity revealed considerable variations in brain function between people in the East
and the West when responding to the same stimuli (Schultz & Schultz, 2017). The different
cultural factors describe a general image of human nature and provides a more inclusive lens
through which others can understand and interact with other cultures.
