Video Analysis: Benito Mussolini

Born in 1883 and died in 1945, Benito Mussolini was an Italian journalist, politician, and

dictator. Mussolini is remembered in Italy and globally for his violent nature, dictatorship, and

fascist ideologies. Through his dictatorship and fascist party, Mussolini became Italy's prime

minister in 1922 and rose to power up to 1943 when he was overthrown. Among the great

achievements of Mussolini was the successful formation of his political party and rise to power.

He was recognized as a good leader by people who approved of his decisions, but Mussolini is

remembered as one of the historical dictators who contributed to Italy's woes.

Foreign Policy

Foreign policy results from the process by which a state or government puts in place

strategies for dealing with other nations and regulating international affairs. Foreign policy is a

historical concept that was applied even before the great global wars (Leira, 2019). It can be

evidenced through the unification of various countries to fight in the first and second world wars.

During Mussolini's reign in Italy, he was committed to showing the world how Italy was

powerful under his leadership. His foreign policy methods were influenced by fascism, more so

in the acquisition of territory in Africa. Mussolini's foreign policy attempts led him into multiple

wars in an attempt to maintain Italy's position as a mighty nation, for instance, his attempt to

surpass the Nazi Germany. Nonetheless, the video did not have information about Mussolini's

attempt at positive foreign policy apart from his good relations with Adolf Hitler of Germany,

who later rescued him from prison and exile.
