Is the implementation of immunisation rates decreasing the distribution of
daily covid-19 cases, hospitalisation and mortality rates in USA?
Rationale:

It has been claimed that ‘immunisation rates impact the global disease distribution’. As the claim did
not detail a particular disease and country a broad research question was derived from the claim,
‘Does immunisation rates impact the disease distribution globally’. Many aspects can be specified
and refined.

A disease is an illness characterised by specific symptoms that are caused by bacteria and infections
(Mellor, 2019). Another key term is global. Since the coronaviruses have been impacting society all
around the world, currently, it was the disease chosen to research. The type of coronavirus will be
Covid-19, which is the fifth pandemic after the 1918 flu pandemic. Immunisation rates was
interpreted as all the corona virus vaccines (such as moderna and Pfizer etc.). Whether or not the
citizens of that country are fully vaccinated or partially vaccinated, it would be considered in the
data and analysis of the report. It is also vaccinations against Covid-19.

Only one country was chosen: the United States of America. According to Ram Kumar (2020), USA is
one of the top countries most affected by covid-19 hence it would be most suitable and to research
on USA. As a first world country, the United States of America (USA) is the third most populated
country with more than 331million people (World Population Review, 2022). Along with covid-19
cases, hospitalisation and mortality rates will also be considered. This is as according to Kelen (2022),
vaccines assist in developing an immunity to the virus by introducing a weaken part of the virus. This
reduces the severity of the virus when the person is infected with the actual virus. Since it doesn’t
create full immunity covid cases may still rise as you can still catch it. However, since the symptoms
will decrease in seriousness, then there should be a decrease in hospitalisation and mortality rates.
Hence, with these three rates it can clearly deduce whether the immunisation rates are effective.

A certain time period was also chosen which is from February first, 2021, to February first 2022.

Thus, after the process of breaking down the claim the following research question was proposed:

“Is the implementation of immunisation rates decreasing the distribution of daily covid-19 cases,
hospitalisation and mortality rates in USA?”

Background:

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses which cause respiratory infections. It was primarily caused by
the virus SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). This was an animal
coronavirus but since the virus was highly contagious, it later adapted the ability to transmit through
human population. The severity of this disease ranges from just a common cold to more serious
diseases (Queensland Government, 2021). Some people may be asymptomatic however, they are
still capable in spreading the disease. Other people may experience more severe symptoms which
may include pneumonia.

On January ninth, 2022, the World Health Organization announces the first reported case on covid
which was found in Wuhan, China. This virus progressively transmits throughout other countries. On
January 20, the first cases to be outside of China reported were in Thailand and Japan (Staff, 2021). It

, has rapidly increased to approximately 592 million cases and 6.44 million deaths of August 2022
(Worldometer, 2022).

Evidence:

All the data collected are recent uploaded from platforms that frequently update hence the data
retrieved from the sources are reliable and credible.

Figure 1: The daily share of people vaccinated in USA retrieved from Ritchie (2022).

As of Feb 1, 2021, the daily number of vaccinations drastically increase and after early April it starts
to decrease and the vaccination rates after that are all below 1 million.
