Assignment 3
Semester 1
2023

, Task 1: Understanding the Concept of "Family."

The concept of family is one that varies from culture to culture and from individual to
individual. In general, a family can be defined as a group of people who are related to each
other by blood, marriage, or adoption and who share a common bond of emotional support,
intimacy, and caregiving.

There are different types of families, and they can be classified based on various factors such
as size, structure, and dynamics. Here are four different types of families:

 Nuclear Family: This is a family structure that consists of a married couple and their
biological or adopted children. It is the most common family structure in modern
Western societies.
 Extended Family: This is a family structure that includes relatives such as
grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins living in the same household or in close
proximity. Extended families are more common in traditional societies and are seen
as a way to provide social support, childcare, and financial assistance.
 Single-Parent Family: This is a family structure that consists of one parent and their
children. Single-parent families can result from divorce, death of a spouse, or a
decision to have a child without a partner.
 Blended Family: This is a family structure that consists of a couple and their children
from previous relationships. Blended families can result from remarriage or
cohabitation.

Three definitions of the term "family" are:

"Family is a group of people who are related by blood, marriage, or adoption and who
share common goals, values, and traditions." (Kendall, 2018)
"Family is a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a
group, whether dwelling together or not." (Merriam-Webster, 2021)
"Family is a group of people who share a sense of history and a common destiny."
(Karpel, 1996)
