Light – Reflection and Refraction
Introduction to Light – Reflection & Refraction

Light: Definition
Light is a form of energy that enables us to see things. Light starts from a source and
bounces off objects which are perceived by our eyes and our brain processes this signal,
which eventually enables us to see.

Light is a type of electromagnetic radiation that allows the human eye to see or makes
objects visible. It is also defined as visible radiation to the human eye. Photons, which are
tiny packets of energy, are found in light. Light always moves in a straight

Nature of Light
Light behaves as a:

 ray, e.g. reflection
 wave, e.g. interference and diffraction
 particle, e.g. photoelectric effect

Properties of Light
Following are the important properties of light –

 Light travels in a straight line.
 The speed of light is faster than sound. Light travels at a speed of 3 x 10 8 m/s.

Reflection of light
The phenomenon of bouncing back of light into the same medium by the smooth
surface is called reflection.
Reflection is the phenomenon in which light travelling in one medium, incident on the surface of
another returns to the first medium, obeying the laws of reflection. According to the laws of
reflection

1. The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal to the surface at the point of incidence
all lie in the same plane.
2. The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.

Incident light: Light which falls on the surface is called incident light.
